[Fan acct] 110701 Xiahzart day performance (superlong)
Finally! I understood Xiahzart’s sorrow
This is a fan account for the daytime performance. It will be a long one.
To sum up, today’s daytime performance was so good, good enough to make me-who’s a big fan of watching performances-shiver.
Finally, after three performances, what did I see from musical actor Kim Junsu that I was craving to see?
I love musicals, though I can’t say I’m a fan in a ‘Play/Musical Gall'(a gall in DC) way, but I saw a lot of great performances in various countries, as I love watching performances, during over ten years.
I saw Adam Pascal’s premiere [Aida], Nathan Lane’s [Producer], was lucky to see Maria Salonga and Michael Crawford in Broadway.
What I felt was, a top star actor and a competent actor is different. No matter how hard you work, you might be an actor but not a top star.
Top stars are born with an aura. And Kim Junsu had that aura.
However, before today, he always stopped right before he reached a certain stage, where he could make my whole body shiver by convincing me of the story and the character. Only leaving an anticipation of the next performance.
So to speak, that certain stage can be reached, when I’m ready to absorb the performance entirely, when the subtle harmony between the actors are perfect, and when the actor is possessed by the character and the story, changing the whole atmosphere on the stage like a magic.
The peak of catharsis that we look for in a performance, very private and only possible by communion.
I became a half-fan through [SKKS], and couldn’t forget the strange pleasure I felt after listening to Kim Junsu’s live at JYJ’s worldwide concert in Seoul for the first time.
His metallic, husky voice turns into a miraculous rich beautiful voice-which unbelievably changes the atmosphere of the surroundings-as he goes from low notes to high notes. The emotion and the powerfulness he showed was really, shocking. His live is like a drug. Makes me starving.
And I was shocked again when I got to see the Musical Concert DVD one day. Aw, shit, this is a star. A star born with the power to seize the stage.
Although [Tears of Heaven] was a horribly poor-quality work, musical actor Kim Junsu that I saw for the first time was way more than expected.
So to speak, when he appears on the stage, the audience’s eyes follow him. Not because you’re a fan, but because there’s something unavoidably interesting.
Even if he’s in the cornor of the stage, he’s sticks out more than the actor who’s singing the main song in the middle of the stage. That is the innate aura.
He ad-libed quickly, reacting to the situation, and the emotion he showed, sheding a flood of tears while he’s singing was surely out of ordinary.
However, sadly, [Tears of Heaven] was definitely not a work where an actor with a huge potential could explode.
The young Jun sparkled, but his acting of the middle age Jun was a bit weak…
But no matter what they say, the audience unconditionally fell in love with Jun. In that musical, it was really, a great achievment.
And I watched Xiahzart that I waited for so long.
And understood. Why Mozart is a role that Kim Junsu doesn’t need to interpret the character contrivedly.
He has no choice but to understand this character instinctively. In so many ways.
The night performance on the 22nd, with Lee Jungyul, Lee Kyungmi and Seo Bumsuk.
Junsu was pitiable that night.
He looked like a rebellious adolescent boy that makes Seo Bumsuk mad, a boy who was a genius but was still an adolescent boy till his death, and a little child who struggled, so sad and angry-he cried his eyes out that night-at the fact he had to die without gettng a chance to live his life.
So to speak, he seemed to feel victimized more than sad. A little child, whimpering and complaining of an injustice.
He was endlessly lovable and pitiable, but the tragic catharsis was hovering around, not actually graspable.
I went home, feeling something was missing.
However, I grasped it today. The subtly tense atmosphere as Min Youngki archbishop and Yun Sengwook papa came in.
Min Younki’s restrained and witty interpretation of his character and his sense of rythm that creates a subtle tension.
I guess maybe Lee Jungyul’s only-threatening archbishop characther confused the story, not being able to form the confilct with Mozart.
So the conflict passes by without having an impact, and Junsu’s interpretation of Mozart gets simple.
However, today’s Xiahzart who fights against Min Youngki archbishop and took on restrained, dry Yun Sengwook papa wasn’t a little child, whimpering and complaining of an injustice, dying as a sacrifice.
He was a tragic hero who boils off heroically after colliding with every fiber of his body, against his genius, the world’s authority trying to suppress and take advantage of his genius, his daily life and his father who was the attacker.
That was because of the energy. Junsu has this explosive energy in his whole body and voice.
That energy is translated right into Mozart’s uncontrollable genius.
On the 22nd, as his opponents’ power weakened, Junsu made a different story.
When you meet a worthy opponent, your dramatic instinct you locked up in yourself explodes in spite of yourself.
Today he emitted energy enough to blow up the theatre, and that energy made the drama.
He controlled his tears during the ‘confusion scene’ and ‘death scene’, which made it even sharper and more sorrowful, delivering the sadness to the audience as a drama not his own sorrow.
I am so glad, that I was there.
The expression Junsu showed when his father died, the shudder I felt at Junsu’s ‘confusion scene’, ‘death scene’, and ‘revolution scene’ was as great as the shudder I felt when I watched the moment Jo Sengwoo turning into an old man from a young man in [Man of La Mancha] and as excellent as anyother performances in the world.
That must have been created by my mind, the very moment, today’s Junsu, the awesome audiences who made today’ atmosphere and Levay who wrote the marvelous songs, but it was undoubtedly fantasic like magic.
Therefore, I’m going to watch every performance of musical actor Kim Junsu whatever happens, because he made my blood boil.
One line summary: I won’t be able to go back even into a half-fan ever. Thanks Kim Junsu. Shit.

it’s long, but i really enjoyed reading it 🙂 (call me weird, but i LOVE reading reviews, like a maniac lol)
man, to have your audience get this feeling after watching you, isn’t it a performer’s biggest achievement? at least, i believe so. imo, it means that he’s succeeded. he’s an artist, and people see him as one…
i didn’t know anything about plays/musicals before, but junsu has definitely opened my eyes.
now, i think i know why they say a musical stage is magical 🙂
